Love the analogy of writing to the Velveteen Rabbit. We really do have to get all grungy, but magic is there somewhere, making the story come alive. I'm glad the blog tour brought me to your blog.

Standing open-mouthed at intersections? Oh yes. I participated in NaNoWriMo '09, made 50,000 words, wrote several thousand more, got to the end of what I knew, and went "Oh shit!" as the path came to an end.

Usually I ascribe to minimal planning and rely on headlight writing - you can only see as far as your headlights, but you can write the whole novel this way. This time, my headlights went out and the ground dropped from under me mid-story.

I've postponed the inevitable by working on other things, writing-related and not, but eventually I'll have to throw myself back at that unfinished draft and pound out the crap, reminding myself as often as necessary that the crap has to come first before I can find the good stuff behind it, the story I meant to write. I can see that process happening as I edit another novel, and that's comforting. It may start out as crap, and fixing it is hard, but eventually it will shine.

Keep fighting the good fight!

You definitely have to take the good with the bad to get a story. I suppose I keep thinking that the best stories are sorta puked out without any logjams, and that's a myth I have to let go of. I don't wade through treacle so much as stand open-mouthed at intersections, but I get where you're going. It's so good to know other people who go through this. xx

I love those 'flying' days, when the words just spill onto the pc screen (sad that 'page' doesn't really apply anymore, in a literal sense). It really does seem like magic sometimes, as if the characters are real people and they're whispering their stories in your ear. I just love it. It makes the days when I'm wading through treacle to get from one scene to another worthwhile.

Not sure if that was the answer you were looking for but I think I'm slightly over-caffeinated. :D
